EDHA Update: Edo Assembly resumes plenary: considers Bill on single haulage fees on Agricultural farm produce

Edo State House of Assembly, has resumed plenary with the consideration of a Bill for a law to establish a single haulage fee on agricultural farm produce in Edo State.

This follows a presentation by the majority leader of the House, Rt.Hon. Henry Okhuarobo that the Bill supports uniformity in the charges on farm produce.
Some of the lawmakers who spoke on the benefits of the Bill stated that while it will create a single fee for goods and agricultural produce.

Members who spoke on the benefits include Hon Emmanuel Okoduwa, Hon Nosayaba Okunbor and Rt.Hon Roland Asoro were unanimous in their support for the Bill stressing that while it provides a legal framework for the smooth administration of taxes, it will also shore up revenue for the State and provide job employment for the teeming youths.
They also explained that it would also plug some of the identified leakages in collection of fees.

Summing up deliberations, Speaker, Rt.Hon. Marcus Onobun thereafter directed the Clerk of the House, Alhaji Audu Omogbai to slate the Bill for a later date.

Also at plenary, the Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Marcus Onobun ksc congratulated the victors in the just concluded general elections across the country. Rt.Hon. Marcus Onobun who is the Member-Elect for Esan West, Esan Central, and Igueben Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, congratulated the lawmakers-elect during plenary which is the first after the just concluded elections.

He urged the victors to use the opportunity given to them to effect better change in their constituencies
He commiserated with those whose Elections were not favourable to be gracious in their defeat, stressing that all have contributed so much for thier respective political parties at the elections.

The Speaker, congratulated the country for the successful completion of the general elections hinged on the amendments to the country’s Constitution.

Meanwhile, a Bill for a Law to establish Gender and Equal Opportunities 2019 suffered a setback at the Edo State House of Assembly.

This followed remarks by some of the lawmakers that the Bill seeks to eliminate the culture and tradition of Edo people.
They urged women to strive for excellence wherever they find themselves adding that enacting such laws may amount to stereotyping the women.

The lawmakers representing Igueben, Esan South East and Orhionmwon East, Ephraim Aluobhosele, Sunny Ojiezele and Nosayabor Okunbor, however noted that a committee should be set up to look into the Bill.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. UMarcus Onobun commended the lawmakers for their contributions and however stepped the Bill down for proper consultation.

Before adjourning to tomorrow the Speaker , disclosed that the house is recieving disturbing news from orogho community in Orhionmwon Local government area with a petition titled
Save Edo land , orogho community from being ceeded to Delta State by Seplat company.
He directed the chairman house committee on community affairs
to look into the petition and submit report to the house.

The Speaker Rt. Hon. Marcus Onobun ksc also intimated the house of the pending supplementary Elections to pray for the Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Roland Asoro and urged all to put him in prayer and support him to emerge victorious at the April 15 2023 ,for Orhionmwon and uhunwonde federal constituency at the House of Representatives.
