The Member representing Esan West, Esan Central, and Igueben Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Marcus Onobun has extended warm felicitations to His Holiness, Pope Robert Francis Prevost, OSA, on his historic election as the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State.
Pope Prevost, born Robert Francis Prevost on September 14, 1955, and formerly the Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and President of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, was elected Supreme Pontiff on May 8, 2025. A former Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru and Prior General of the Order of Saint Augustine, he becomes the first American to ascend to the Papacy.
In his congratulatory message, Rt. Hon. Marcus Onobun described the Pope’s election as “a moment of profound significance for the global Catholic community and humanity at large.”
“Your Holiness, your elevation to the Papal throne is a testament to your decades of devoted service, humility, and leadership within the Church. Your background as a bridge between cultures and continents stands as a beacon of hope in these times. We pray your tenure ushers in renewed unity, peace, and spiritual growth across nations,” Onobun said.
The lawmaker further emphasized that the people of Esanland join the global community in celebrating the beginning of a new era under Pope Prevost’s spiritual guidance and leadership.
