EDHA NEWS UPDATE: Harmonised Retirement Bill

The Bill for a Law to repeal the Edo state private property protection Law passes third reading.

Rt Hon. Marcus Onobun gave audience to The Joint National Association of persons with Disabilities.

Edo State House of Assembly today passed an Executive Bill amending provisions of the State Harmonised Retirement age of staff of Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Rule 2021 and for other purposes.

The passage of the Bill followed receipt of twenty four(24) copies of the Bill sent by the Governor Mr Godwin Obaseki on Monday.

The House at the committee of a whole effected minor amendments on sections 4,5 and 6 of the principal Law and other sections . Leading the debate for the amendment, Majority Leader RT.Hon. Henry Okhuarobo said the Bill had minor amendments on some sections of the harmonised Bill.

On return to plenary, the House Speaker, RT.Hon. Marcus Onobun highlighted some amendments. He directed the Clerk Alhaji Audu Yahaya-Omogbai to accord the Bill a third reading while clean copies are to be forwarded to Governor Obaseki for his assent .

Similarly the House at the committee of a whole considered and passed the Bill for a Law to repeal the Edo state private property protection Law 2017 and to re-enact the Edo State Private property protection Law 2021 and other connected purposes.

Majority leader, Rt.Hon. Henry Okhuarobo said consideration of the Bill was imperative in view to ensuring peace and harmony in ownership and management of land.

Deputy whip, Hon. Ephraim Aluebhosele representing Igueben constituency said the Bill is apt in view of the role of private property in economic development.
He said the Bill in implementation will enhance employment , guarantee land security for agricultural production , food security, urban development and Increase value of property by encouraging private sector development in the State.

Member representing Esan North East Constituency RT.Hon. Francis Okiye and Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Roland Asoro adopted submission of previous speakers in support of the Bill earlier passed by the sixth Assembly.

The Speaker, Rt.Hon. Marcus Onobun who also aligned with position of members said the Bill is apt as it will prohibit forceful acquisition of any private property in the state, illegal occupation of property, help address frivolous petitions. He thereafter directed a third reading of the bill while clean copies are to be forwarded to Governor Obaseki for his assent and to other relevant agencies.

Earlier in the day, the Speaker had gave audience to the chairperson and members of the Joint National Association of persons with Disabilities (Edo State Chapter).

In her address, the chairperson of The Joint National Association of persons with Disabilities Anna Obehi Ojugo appealed to the Speaker and the house to help in the passage of a Bill for a Law to ensure full integration of Persons with Disabilities into the Society and to Establish Edo State Commission for Persons with Disabilities and other matters connected there to.

The Speaker in his response assured them that the 7th Assembly will expedite actions to ensure the relevant Bills that concerns persons with Disabilities are passed into law.
