Edo Assembly passes Local government and EDSIEC amendment bill

The State House of Assembly has passed the Edo State local government electoral law and Edo state Independent Electoral Commission Establishment Re-enactment Amendment 1 Law 2022, known as the Principal Law.

Earlier, the majority leader, and member representing Ikpoba Okha constituency, Henry Okhuarobo in his application called for the suspension of some house rules and resolve into the committee of the whole.

The speaker, Rt Hon Marcus Onobun harped on the importance of the law, stressing that the amendment is a needed impetus in strengthening the local government system as well as depeening democracy.

The speaker thereafter directed the clerk of the house to forward clean copies of the resolution to relevant authorities for assent.

Meanwhile, the consideration of the bill for a law to repeal the Edo State development and property agency law 2018 was deferred to a later date for proper deliberation.
This the speaker said would give the lawmakers an opportunity to consult with constituents and other stakeholders.

Also at plenary the house received a letter from
Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki with the names of nominees for Chairman and Executive Secretary of the Edo State Primary Healthcare Agency for consideration and confirmation.

The Governor’s request was contained in a letter dated 4th of August, 2022.

Gov Obaseki is requesting that the nominees, Dr Felix Ogedengbe and Dr Izedomwen Omosigho be properly screened and confirmed

The speaker, Rt Hon Marcus Onobun thereafter set up a three man adhoc committee chaired by Hon Nosayaba Okunbor, with Hon Ephraim Aluebhosele and Hon Emma Agbaje as members to interact and screen the nominees and report to the house.

The house then adjourned sitting to tuesday 16th, August 2022.
